Saint Anne Catholic Church
Restoration of Tradition

Following almost 20 years of suppression, the Traditional Latin Mass, commonly known as the "Tridentine Latin Mass", was restored to the liturgy of the Church in 1984 by Pope John Paul II.  The first US diocese to avail itself of the "indult" by which the Traditional Latin Mass was permitted was the Diocese of San Diego.  On Sunday, February 24, 1985, the Traditional Latin Mass Congregation gathered for the first time at St. Vincent de Paul Church in the Mission Hills community of San Diego where Monsignor Tullio Andreatta, KCHS, offered the Traditional Latin Mass as authorized by Pope John Paul II and Bishop Maher.

From 1985 to 2008, the Traditional Latin Mass was offered every Sunday and on Holydays at Holy Cross Mausoleum Chapel under the direction of Msgr Andreatta (1985-1991), Rev. Harry Neely, OSA (1991-2004), the Most Rev. Eugene Hayes, O.Praem, Abbot of St. Michael's Abbey, Silverado, California (2004-2005) and Rev. William Dillard (2005-2008).

In 2007, following Pope Benedict XVI's Apostolic Letter Summorum Pontificum, a Daily Mass was allowed at St. John the Evangelist Church, San Diego and, beginning in February 2008, at Mission St.. Anne.

In keeping with the Pope Benedict's wishes as expressed in his Apostolic Letter, on  October 7, 2008, Bishop Robert H. Brom , Bishop of San Diego, erected St. Anne Catholic Church as a personal parish for the Traditional Latin Mass apostolate and invited the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter to assume responsibility for the apostolate.  Fr. Carl N. Gismondi, Jr., FSSP, was appointed as the first Pastor of St. Anne's Catholic Church.

The following albums provide a photographic chronicle of the transition of St. Anne Church from its erection in 1921, through the post-Vatican II period of 1970 to 2007, to its reincarnation as the "Beacon pf Tradition"  for the Diocese of San Diego.
